Celebrating Health

For the last two years, I’ve spent my holidays recovering from procedures and surgeries. It’s not been fun or easy. But I’m here. Sitting in my chair writing and looking at the twinkling white lights on my holiday tree.

I’m alive. Even though some young doctor told me, “You remind me of my mother, there’s nothing wrong with you.” Yeah. Right. Major surgery was required but it took almost a year to get there.

But I’m here. Now. And today, I’m snacking on homemade shortbread, cherry cake and  chocolate candies.

Letting the light in.

Remembering staying up into the wee hours sewing Winnie the Pooh characters into felt tree decorations for my little children. (They officially came from Santa.)

Packing up race cars, paints, books and a very tiny ‘Hungry Caterpillar’ to put under the tree for my children’s little children.

Sighing with relief. All is well. (Maybe not in our country right now).

But right here. Right now. In my small space on this big planet.

All is quiet. All is bright.

And I am well.

My Christmas wish: For everyone, everywhere to have enough food, warmth and love.

And Health.

Now that’s really something to celebrate.

I’m alive.

And I’m thankful.

Now that’s really something to celebrate.

Letting The Light In

It’s that time of year when the sun sets early and it gets dark. I admit, I don’t like it. It makes me crave my tea and cookies which I do like, of course. The turning of the earth and the winter season brings many feelings to the surface for all of us.

This year has brought many challenges from lay offs to fighting for 6 months to get social security and medical benefits. It’s been a scary roller coaster ride but now, thankfully, the dust is settling and my anxiety is easing.

Small comforts and joys.

I worried about the Holiday season this year. Would we have to cut back on all the things we usually do? How would we manage gifts and stockings for all? One thing I have come to know is we are not alone this year. Many people are facing a different holiday season: inflation pushing up prices and salaries are down or gone.

I wasn’t looking forward to decorating at all. But here’s what I found out: I can still feel comfort and joy.

The wreath I made years ago, still looks joyful on the hall table.

The Christmas books we’ve read to our children and now grandchildren are still fun to share.

The stockings have grown to include new babies and spouses.

And this year, we’re filling them with homemade treats and handmade decorations.

Light and lightening up.

The lights on the tree give me the boost I need in the darkening afternoon.  Sitting in the nook next to my best friend and husband, I breathe in the light of our love. While some things have changed drastically for us, our relationship has not.

In fact, right now as I write this blog, he is writing his podcast. We are both healthy and active and creative on our own and together.

Yes, we have to lighten up our gift giving this year.

But the light we share is still there.

For each other, for our children, grandchildren and friends.

What I have to do everyday is remember:

To let it in.

Making it merry. Again.

It’s been a difficult few years, right? And I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about this holiday season. So much has changed in our world, cities and homes. If you’ve been reading here, you’ll know my home has been through a lot of changes. Some bad. And some good. That’s why it was even more important to me this year to make it all merry, again.

Most of my downstairs due to water damage has been completely reconstructed. All the floors, counter tops, cabinetry and wall colors have changed. So using the decorations from previous years was a challenge. Some fit. Some didn’t.

Tweaking the tree.

Before we even set up the tree, I knew I’d need to change my color scheme. With the burgundy wall painted grey and the mantle painted black, it was time for new ideas.

White reindeers now sit along the mantle driven by a black sleigh surrounded by white trees.

Bold black and white check bows went on the wreath and stairway.

More black and white check ribbon encircled the re-usable tree.

The challenge: Do more with less.

Before the reconstruction, we used to have more room. The nook hutch was taken out and the demolished old desk area shelves were deeper and wider. The new combined cabinet and desk area is beautiful. But it gave me a lot less display space than before. I was determined to find a new way to do more with less.

Childhood Christmas books found a new place alongside a newly edited Santa collection. The teapot collection still features the Spode teapot alongside just a few teacups and teapots.

Finding new ways to use old favorites.

The change from a white tile island to a black quartz countertop is a big one. But it does work with the new black, white and red theme, too. And my white porcelain leaf, jars in red, white and black and the red porcelain bowl keep the island looking merry and bright.

White and red poinsettias look good by the sink.

Yes, the house was flooded and broken.

But now, it’s all reconstructed and redone.

And I’m so grateful.

We are all well and together.

And making it merry.

Again.

Light

Today, I sat like a cat in the sunlight and wallowed in it. I read and snoozed and put my feet up for a bit. Basking in the cozy warmth for a few hours, I forgot that it was cold outside. As soon as my neck felt that cool shiver of daylight dipping, I got up and made a cup of tea. And watched the light change outside and in.

I see once again how important light is to the world and to me. We all need it and it feeds us all in so many ways.

Warmth.

Decorating, during the holiday or not, is more to me than creating a functional living space. It’s an emotional and creative process. It’s a way I make my house into a nest from which my husband, children, and now grandchildren can feel loved and supported and grow. Even when they need to fly the nest, it’s always here should they need a soft place to land for while.

This last week, I redecorated many areas for the holidays. Books and toys and candles and twinkling lights and china all come down from shelves and cupboards and closets to bring back cozy childhood memories, beauty and soft warmth.

A few pieces of my Spode Christmas Tree collection and gifted teapots mingle with my handmade porcelain teapot and teacups. Afternoon tea is becoming a daily ritual.

Santas sit, pose and ring in several spots around the downstairs.

The coffee table set up for play with the Brio train set that now two generations enjoy.

The tree and stairway sparkle.

Light is life.

I love twinkling lights year round. And the holidays just give me more chances to play with light.  And I know, especially this year, I need even more light and warmth in my life.

We may not all be able to gather or celebrate this year in the ways we always do, but we can still celebrate the sun shining outside, the warmth in our own home and let that light warm our souls and lighten our hearts.
